The software someone builds you vs the software someone runs for you
When you commission software, you are choosing between two different things, even when they look the same on a proposal. One is a project that gets delivered. The other is a system someone keeps running for you. They sound alike on paper. What you are left with afterwards is not.
What a delivered project really is
A delivered project has an end date. A team builds to a spec, hands over the code and a folder of documents, and the engagement closes. After that, keeping the software alive is your problem. For something simple that rarely changes, that is fine. When the software runs your operations, it is a risk you have quietly taken on.
What it means when someone runs it for you
When someone runs the system for you, the relationship does not end at launch. They host it, watch it, fix it, and change it as your business changes. What you are paying for is not a deliverable. It is the fact that the system keeps working, and that the people who understand it are still one message away.

Which one do you actually need?
A simple brochure site is fine as a project. But when the software runs the core of the business, the answer changes:
- ✓It runs your orders, stock, or finances.
- ✓It has to change as your business changes.
- ✓It would hurt to have it down for a day.
If any of those are true, you need something someone runs, not just something someone builds.
You are not buying a deliverable. You are buying the fact that it keeps working.
The honest test
Ask any software partner one question: who is responsible for this in three years? If the answer is you, you bought a project. If the answer is we are, you bought a system.
