Every operations leader hits the same fork. You need a system to run part of the business, and there are three ways to get one: build it, buy it, or connect what you already have. Most advice frames this as build versus buy, and quietly ignores the third option, which is often the right one.

Build
Software made to fit your exact process.
Buy
A ready-made product you configure.
Integrate
Connect and extend the systems you already run.

How the three compare

None of these is the right answer on its own. What separates them is fit, cost, and who carries the system once it is live.

Build custom Buy off-the-shelf Integrate what you have
Fit to your process Exact A compromise Keeps what fits, adds the rest
Time to value Longer Fast Medium
Ongoing cost Predictable if run well Licences that grow with you Lowest, reuses what you own
Who maintains it The team that built it The vendor, on their roadmap The team that connects it
Best when Your process is the advantage The problem is generic You already run a system that works

A rough way to decide

Before committing to any of the three, ask:

1

Is this process a competitive advantage, or something every business does the same way?
2

Do you already run a system that works, that this could connect to?
3

What will an off-the-shelf licence cost as you grow?
4

Who will still be responsible for it in three years?

The honest answers usually point at one option more than the others.

Where we fit

WebOps builds and integrates. We’re not a reseller, so we won’t push a licence we can’t stand behind. When a ready-made product genuinely fits, we’ll say so. More often, the right answer is to build the part that makes you different and connect it to what you already run, then keep the result running.

Build the part that makes you different. Connect the rest to what you already have.

Rarely all or nothing

Build, buy, or integrate is seldom a clean choice. The best systems usually mix all three: a bought tool here, a custom part there, connected into one whole.

If you’re weighing this for a real decision, tell us what you’re trying to run, on WhatsApp from any page of the site, and we’ll talk it through.
